Get your lighting and setup right

Consistency is what makes a comparison trustworthy. Keep these five things stable and small changes become visible.

Step by step

1. 1Lighting — use the same light source at roughly the same time of day. Even, indirect light is best; avoid harsh overhead or direct sun.
2. 2Angle — hold the camera at the same height and tilt each time. The overlay helps you match it.
3. 3Distance — stand the same distance away; the overlay outline should match your outline.
4. 4Position — keep the same posture, expression and hair position.
5. 5Background — use a plain, unchanging background so nothing else draws the eye.
