Work Out for You: Finding Movement You Actually Enjoy

Movement can be about energy, headspace and confidence rather than comparison. How to find the kind you look forward to.

Most people who say they hate exercise have only ever tried the versions someone else chose for them. A gym at seven in the morning, a class that moved too fast, a plan designed for a body and a schedule that were not theirs.

There is a much larger world of movement than that: swimming, dancing in the kitchen, seated strength work, gardening, cycling, stretching on the floor while something plays in the background, pushing a pram up a hill. All of it counts, because the point is how it makes you feel afterwards.

Try reframing the question. Instead of what should I be doing, ask what would I look forward to on a Wednesday evening. The answer is usually smaller and gentler than the plan you were about to abandon.

Movement is not a punishment for eating, and it is not a fee you pay to look different. It can be for energy, sleep, headspace, mobility, strength, confidence, being outside, or simply having twenty minutes that belongs to you.

Ways to find your version

  • Pick something you would do even if nobody ever saw the results.
  • Start at a length of time that feels almost too easy, and repeat it.
  • Adapt freely — seated, supported, shorter, slower are all valid versions.
  • Notice how you feel an hour afterwards, and let that guide the next choice.
  • Rest days are part of the routine, not a gap in it.
