Making Wash Day Feel Like Self-Care

Wash day does not have to be a chore you dread. A calmer, simpler routine you can actually look forward to.

Wash day has a reputation: hours long, arms aching, five products deep, and somehow still rushed. It does not have to be that. For a lot of people, the version that works is shorter, simpler and planned for a time when nothing else is competing for the afternoon.

Start by deciding what your hair actually needs that day rather than following a routine you inherited from a video. Sometimes that is a full cleanse, condition, detangle and style. Sometimes it is a rinse and a bit of moisture.

Detangling is where most of the time and most of the breakage happens, so it is worth slowing down there specifically: sections, slip from conditioner or water, fingers before a comb, ends before roots.

Whatever your texture, and whatever you choose to do with it — natural, straightened, coloured, relaxed, braided, wigged or in protective styles — none of those choices need justifying. They are yours.

A simpler wash day

  • Work in four to six sections so nothing gets forgotten or over-handled.
  • Detangle with plenty of slip, from the ends upwards, fingers first.
  • Keep the product list short enough that you know what each one does.
  • Give yourself something enjoyable alongside it — music, a podcast, a film.
  • Photograph the same section in the same light each month so you can see the slow changes.
