Simple Smoothie Ideas for Busy Mornings

Four blender-and-go combinations with quantities, prep time and swaps for whatever is actually in your freezer.

A smoothie is a good answer to a rushed morning, and a very forgiving recipe. The reliable formula is one fruit, one liquid, something creamy and something for staying power.

Berry and oat — 3 minutes, serves 1. 150g frozen berries, 200ml milk of choice, 2 tablespoons rolled oats, 1 tablespoon yoghurt. Thick, purple and genuinely filling.

Green banana — 3 minutes, serves 1. 1 frozen banana, large handful spinach, 200ml milk, 1 tablespoon nut butter. You cannot taste the spinach, which is the whole point.

Mango and yoghurt — 3 minutes, serves 1. 150g frozen mango, 100g yoghurt, 150ml water or juice, squeeze of lime.

Cocoa and oat — 3 minutes, serves 1. 1 banana, 1 tablespoon cocoa, 2 tablespoons oats, 200ml milk. Tastes like a treat, which is allowed.

Practical notes

  • Freeze chopped fruit in portion bags so mornings are a pour-and-blend job.
  • Allergens: contains milk, nuts or oats depending on the version — swap freely.
  • Add water gradually; it is easier to thin than to thicken.
  • Best drunk fresh, but keeps a few hours in a sealed bottle in the fridge.
  • A smoothie alongside toast makes a better breakfast than a smoothie alone.
