Simple DIY Hair Mask Ideas to Try at Home

Gentle kitchen-cupboard conditioning rituals, what they can and cannot do, and how to patch test properly.

A homemade hair mask is a cosmetic ritual, not a treatment. Used sensibly, ingredients like avocado, banana, yoghurt, honey and suitable cosmetic oils can leave hair feeling softer and easier to detangle for a wash or two. That is the honest ceiling of what they do.

They will not make hair grow, reverse hair loss, permanently repair damage, change your hair type or treat any scalp condition. Anyone promising that is selling something.

A simple version: half a ripe avocado blended smooth with a tablespoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of yoghurt, applied to damp mid-lengths and ends for 20 minutes, then rinsed and shampooed out. Blend properly — lumps of avocado in coils are a genuinely miserable afternoon.

Keep mixtures off broken, inflamed or irritated skin and scalp entirely, and treat the whole thing as twenty relaxing minutes rather than a medical intervention.

Doing it safely

  • Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours before applying anywhere else.
  • Rinse out immediately and stop using it if you notice stinging, itching or redness.
  • Avoid harsh or irritating ingredients such as neat citrus juice, vinegar, chilli or raw garlic.
  • Make it fresh each time and do not store food-based mixtures.
  • Avoid entirely if you have a relevant food allergy — skin contact matters too.
