More Colour on My Plate: Starting a Food Journae
How to document what you are discovering about food without turning eating into a performance metric.
A Food Journae is not a food diary in the calorie-counting sense, and it should not become one. It is a record of what you cooked, what you enjoyed, what you would make again, and what you learned along the way.
People use it in very different ways. Cooking More at Home. My Recipe Journae. Trying 30 New Foods. More Colour on My Plate. Learning to Cook. 30 Homemade Lunches. My Baking Journae. Garden to Plate.
The thing that makes it enjoyable rather than exhausting is what you choose to capture: the meal, a line about how it went, and whether it is worth repeating. That is enough to build something genuinely lovely to look back on.
If tracking food ever starts to feel like surveillance rather than curiosity, that is a good signal to widen the interval or stop. This should add to your week, not police it.
Worth capturing
- A photo of the meal, taken quickly and imperfectly.
- A one-line note: too salty, brilliant, make again, halve the chilli.
- New ingredients or skills you tried for the first time.
- Anything you grew, foraged, baked or cooked for someone else.
- Small milestones — the first week of homemade lunches, the tenth new food.
This article describes visual observations and tracking habits only. It is not medical advice and does not diagnose conditions or recommend treatments.
