Eating Well When Life Is Busy

Nourish yourself, don't punish yourself. Realistic ways to add variety and colour to meals when there is no time.

Most advice about eating well assumes a free Sunday, a big budget and a love of cooking. Real weeks are not like that, which is why the plans fall apart by Wednesday and take a bit of self-respect with them.

A more durable approach is to make small additions rather than big restrictions. One more colour on the plate. One extra vegetable in whatever you were already making. A piece of fruit in your bag. A tin of beans stirred into the pasta sauce.

Frozen, tinned and pre-chopped ingredients are genuinely useful, not a compromise. Frozen peas, spinach and berries are affordable, keep for months and require no preparation at all.

None of this is about being good or bad. Food is not a moral test. It is fuel, comfort, culture and pleasure all at once, and a week that includes all of those is a week worth having.

Small additions that stick

  • Add one extra vegetable to a meal you already cook regularly.
  • Keep a few easy wins in the freezer and cupboard for the worst evenings.
  • Cook once, eat twice — make enough for tomorrow's lunch on purpose.
  • Try one new nutritious ingredient a week, with no pressure to like it.
  • Drink water alongside meals rather than counting anything.
